VACATION
BIBLE SCHOOL - AVALANCHE RANCH
Welcome
to Avalanche
Ranch:
A Wild Ride Through God’s Word
In just a few short months, our church will go wild with kids seeking fun
and adventure at our Avalanche Ranch VBS! They’ll be worshipping God through
songs and prayer, making Bible Point crafts, and discovering life-changing Bible
truths in fun and memorable ways.
To have the best adventure possible, we need
lots of volunteers who can give some time, energy, and love to the kids who will
attend. So let me share a few ideas about ways you
might be able to make this program a success. Please check out the following
list, then pray about where God might use you:
Station Leaders: Use easy-to-follow leader manuals and prepare one twenty-minute
session each day. Repeat that session…as you lead up to twenty children
in…worship, crafts and missions, games, video
Bible study and discussion, snacks, storytelling, daily closing show,
PowerPoint drama, or preschool.
Ranch Crew Leaders: Teach the main Bible lesson for each
grade level and travel with your crews to each exciting station on the Ranch.
Still don’t see something that interests you? We’d also love to have
a…registration team, decorating team, music leader, photographer, and
publicity coordinator.
Guess what! There are a few spots for anyone who’s
dramatically inclined! Whatever your gifts, abilities, and time commitment,
we’ve got a place for you!
We believe that God will use this incredible program to reach
many children with the message of his love, so please prayerfully consider your
role in Avalanche Ranch VBS. Feel free to contact me by e-mail, phone, or in
person if you have any questions. (For more information about Avalanche Ranch,
visit http://www.group.com/vbs.
You can even connect with others who have volunteered in similar programs in the
past at the VBS message boards.) Contact Debbie VanZandt 241-8112 or
debvanz@sbcglobal.net for more information.

The Party Line -
There is no doubt that things are different in today’s culture than
when you, as parents of teenagers, were younger.
I can remember getting my first cell phone when I was a sophomore, in
college!!!
And even then I didn’t carry it around with me much because it was so
big.
And text messaging wasn’t even on the radar yet.
I still had this thing called a landline and an answering machine.
I know that many of you still have these things, but I would guess that
the real way to get into contact with you would be through your cell. My dad
still talks about when he was a kid that they didn’t just have a landline, but
it was a “party line.”
And while that sounds like it could be fun, it wasn’t.
For the younger ones, a “party line” is when you would actually have
a number of families all with the same phone line.
You would have to pick up the phone and see if anyone from another family
was on before you could make your call.
So, parents, things have changed.
The point is, don’t expect things to be the same with your kids as they
were for you.
The youth of today are growing up in a different world than you did.
Yes, some things are the same, but much is different.
This means that you may have to do a little studying yourself to try and
figure out what is going on.
There are many resources out there that would be beneficial for you to
look at.
If you are an Internet user, I am listing a website below for you to look
at that has tons of resources.
By your knowing what it is students are facing in this new culture, you
will have a better chance at recognizing when they are facing things themselves.
Because let’s be realistic, your children WILL be faced with something
before your job is done as a parent.
Don’t wait until you get one of the dreaded phone calls before you take
that seriously.

Easter Tradition
Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around the Easter holiday.
My mother was a genius at making Easter baskets filled with all kinds of
goodies – chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, chocolate eggs, marshmallow eggs,
and boiled eggs of extraordinary color, all crammed into a wicker basket.
No pre-made basket for my mom would ever do.
(Thanks mom!)
I can look at the black and white photos of
those times and actually relive some of the best days of my life.
Those Easter holidays of my childhood were days filled with wonderment,
smiles, discovery, and joy. I knew
that I was loved and life was good. What
more could a child hope for?
Of course, as an adult, I know the real meaning of Easter.
It’s about Jesus. He died,
was buried, and rose on the third day.
The word Easter is, after all, a compilation of the words
‘east’ and ‘star’ – referring to the star that lead the wisemen to the
Christ child. The Easter holiday,
one would surmise, is supposed to do the same for us, except in this case to
lead us to the resurrected Jesus. I
would think that there could be no higher goal than to lead one’s family to
celebrate the resurrected Lord also.
What better way to honor the Lord on Easter Sunday than to
demonstrate our love for Him in the way we love our family?
I believe that one of the best things I can do on that day, besides
worship the Lord, is to carry on the tradition of Easter baskets, egg hunts, and
chocolate galore. Don’t
misunderstand my motive. I want the
Lord to be glorified throughout that day – but I don’t want to miss the
opportunity to glorify Him by creating and continuing a family memory.
When all is said and done – I hope that my children will look back on
those Easter holidays of their childhood and remember that they were loved and
life was good!
Simply
stated: If
I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, all that I am is
just an instrument out of tune (1 Corinthians 13:1, WT).
Looking
to the East, Pastor Jack

Mission Durango - Begin
praying now about whether God is calling you
to go on the
July mission trip to Cinco de Febrero.
The following items are being collected for Rob’s May
trip, please bring them to the church by April
22nd.
For
April:
We would like to have a Vitamin drive. Nutritional supplements would be
very helpful in providing a better quality of health for the children that we
work with. If every member of your church or organization or even family
representative could provide one bottle of children's vitamins, we would have
more than enough to cover each village. For
May:
Umbrellas. July through August (and sometimes September) are the rainy
months for Durango. Is this a trivial need? I do not think so.
The umbrellas will help in keeping the children and their parents dry and warm.
Warm? Yes, during the rainy season it can get rather cool here. For
example, last August when I left Durango it was 68 degrees with a light shower
and when I arrived in San Antonio, TX it was 104 degrees (and with the humidity,
I needed a shower). This may be another reason to schedule a mission trip
to Durango in August.
