The Cameo
Written by: Mary Willis

The dictionary defines a cameo as a gem or shell carved in a raised design with the background consisting of layers and contrasting colors. Other references say that a cameo is considered to be more than just a piece of jewelry. It is something to be cherished as a personal item. Yet, it is never owned, it is just looked after for the next generation. Each one is unique in its own way with none being exactly alike.

Before the stone or shell reaches the hand of the artist, it is smoothed and rounded . The rough outer layer remains exposed as this is where the master carver will fashion his masterpiece following the design he has chosen. Sitting in front of a window streaming with sunlight, he slowly and carefully transforms the outer layer into a beautiful cameo giving it life and personality.

Before the cameo is sold the master carver checks each piece, adds his own finishing touch, and signs the back. The touch he adds transforms a beautiful cameo into a superb piece of art.

So how does the cameo relate to us as women?

Just as the artist sees what the rough stone can become, God sees our possibility and potential. Every child born into the world is a new thought of God and an ever fresh and radiant possibility. God is our designer or Master Carver. He understands us just as the artist of the cameo understands the potential of each stone he holds in his hand. Each of us is unique in her own way, someone who is cherished by her Maker.

God takes the rough, sometimes shattered, shells of our lives and transforms them into something beautiful. He signs us with his signature; the Holy Spirit. His light shines from within us so others may see and know the Savior, the one who gives us life, hope and purpose.

The layers of our lives read like a book of history. They are filled with stories of love and faith, devotion and sacrifice each displaying God’s workmanship which he . . .”prepared in advance for us to do.” Share your stories; preserve and pass them on to the next generation as they are your legacy. Celebrate and share your gifts and unique qualities, your faith and potential as a woman - a Women of Grace .

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
